Climate Change - 2009/04/24 09:38 GMT This forum for sharing is a noble activity which is very enlightening. I have done some work on the estimation of below and aboveground carbon in a forest ecosystem. The most challenging exercise I encountered was the calculation of tree carbon. This was compounded by the lak of/ minimum data from eastern and souther Africa.

Discussions on estimating tree carbon will go a long way in enhancing....

Re:Climate Change - 2009/04/24 10:21 GMT Can you share/upload the outcome of your research with other? I am personaly interested in that topic.
Does any one have done or know of work on estimating tree carbon?

Re:Climate Change - 2009/04/24 18:39 GMT I saw a study of this for Miombo woodland trees in Zambia in the 1980s. The roots of the trees had been dug up and measured, a big task! But I think there is some theoretical and empirical studies on the relationship between the above-ground and below-ground biomass. E.g. if branches of trees are pruned, the roots also die back towards a basic ratio between above-ground and below-ground biomass. There is variation in this ratio across tree species and also with the age of the trees. E.g. some trees develop strong roots, including a deep taproot, before they exand much above ground.

Re:Climate Change - 2009/04/27 13:54 GMT I have two papers which I wrote but they are not yet published. I can share them with you to read the process of estimating tree carbon.

Re:Climate Change - 2009/04/27 14:11 GMT Thanks for your insightful comment. In my study, I actually used literature from Zambia, Cameroon and India. The main challenge was the equation to use which best suits the Kenyan indigineous trees. That is why I requested for more information on the method to be used to estimate tree carbon.
