Re:Q8: - 2009/04/25 12:22 GMT It is true that an increase of human activities can lead to an increase in productivity of land regardless of the initial productivity of the land, for a land experiencing desert encroachment can be enrich by a good land taxation policy, also a land experiencing deforestation can also be checkmate by a good taxz regime,so also gas emmission and so on and son. Re:Q8: - 2009/04/30 05:46 GMT The Mount Elgon area in East Africa is teaming with people that cultivate the slopes. It typifies the issue of which you write. As population has increased the cultivation has become more intensive and land degradation becomes a key issue. At the same time, more residences built on the slopes means more homes requiring more fuel. Deforestation proceeds at a pace. As climate changes, landslides have also become more frequent.
“Imposing a law” will not help ~ criminalisation is fairly meaningless in areas where policing by the state is minimal/ non-existent ~ but interventions are needed. There has been some development of co-operatives using more sustainable approaches. This should be encouraged. Financial incentives that promote good practice would be useful along with the more general sensitising programme. Training community ‘champions’ might be a way forward. Interventions that demonstrate good practice in schools are helpful.

Re:Q8: - 2009/04/30 08:58 GMT Existence of land management laws is essential for dealing with land degradation especially if they are translated into simple management regulation. However in the end it is peoples' internalization of the problem and their acceptability of the solutions, that will carry the day.I have noted that availability of free seedlings helps in tree planting even when the rate of survival is low. Again interventions of land degradation are good areas for youth involvement in form of employment particularly land that public.Strengthening of local institutions and organizations and continuous public education would contribute.

Re:Q8: - 2009/05/06 12:33 GMT There shall be strict norms in protecting the slopes otherwise the rare soil resources will be vanished for ever.

However, people need government support in this regard. International programmes of conservation of soils of slopes and monitoring of such issues shall be highly useful, because soils are 'global assets' meant to support humanity infinitely.
