Environment Education - 2009/05/06 18:57 GMT The essence of environment education shall be to help people to follow simple life styles.

If people aspire for consumerist life styles, sustainable development cannot be achieved; especially when the finite natural resources are getting depleted very fast. In such situations slums will accumulate more in urban systems.

Village and urban people shall be given proper guidance for simple life style; if the current developmental concept of urbanization of villages is continued, humans globally will have to suffer due to resource crunches and the resultant competitionss.

Therefore, 'ruralizaton of urban systems' may be the target for humans in the current millenium. This idea may seem quite utopian at present, but it is high time that humans need to look at development in an alternative way to improve happiness and not consumption. True and sustainable happiness is achievable through spiritual enlightment as well. Environmental education aiming at setting such alternative goals in the minds of youth ultimately decides whether humans survive or not on the earth.

Re:Environment Education - 2009/05/07 15:11 GMT Education acculturises people. Education makes people intelligent to cope with life experiences effectively. Education makes people human beings from animality.

Human beings are part and user of environment. They consume and change the environment which sometimes causes devastating human sufferings for human generations.

The owner of the environment is not a single community or a nation only. It is an inter-generational resource for entire human race.

Human being learns from the environment.

The education curriculum must include environmental topics from elementary to tertiary levels covering issues like geography, natural resources, weather, pollution, GIS, GPS, LIS, sustainable Development, Sustainable Land Management, Green House Effect, environmental hazards, natural disasters and calamities including laws and regulations related to environment.

Re:Environment Education - 2009/05/08 17:53 GMT It is true that environment is everything or the sum of factors that affect the sustenance of anything or any activity in this universe. It is a highly relative term and it can be defined only in relation to something or some activity. Such an identification or description of environment and conservation of certain environmental component cannot solve environment problems forever.

Therefore, 'environment education' shall not be a mere inventory of environment factors alone(interrelationships that may be conserved or strengthened or protected towards a successful temporary life for individuals of the time being). Instead, it shall explain to humans their existence as part of a complex network of dynamic biotic interactions, which is infinite.

The logic that present generations have obligations to future generations cannot be explained in terms of materialistic thinking. Ecology is a moral science that explains life is infinite and each genrations have to safeguard the interests of the future generations. Therefore, the intelligence of humans make inventory of environment, not as a means to temporary pleasures, but to repair the damages already happened to the system either by ignorance or irresponsibility the past human performance on the earth.

One of the major ignorance and irresponsibility that humans still hold is that excess rate of consumption of resources is 'developmnet' and the means to 'happiness'. Such development thinkers are in fool's paradise!

Therefore, true environment education programmes shall focus on issues of consumerist life style in depth, and emphasize the 'limit to use of resources' which is inherent in nature's set up.

Why and how should humans follow simple life style shall be the major theme of environment education, otherwise, conflicts between the rich and poor will continue and slums will become more severe a problem in future.
