Rescue plans for areas threatened by sea level rise and storm floods - 2009/05/06 08:08 GMT Vulnerable areas with large poor populations that are unable to protect themselves against sea level rise and storm floods will need international and national support. Whether it is most appropriate to invest to protect their current livelihoods or to organize resettlement in safer locations depend on the relative costs of the alternative solutions. Cost assessments of alternative plans are needed.

Re:Rescue plans for areas threatened by sea level rise and storm floods - 2009/05/07 08:53 GMT There is a need for balanced environmental planning and sustainable development in coastal areas, whilst considering Millennium Development Goal targets on extending safe water and basic sanitation to poor communities . Poverty alleviation mechanisms within local communities could encourage indirect adaptation measures to climate vulnerability in coastal areas. This is related to improving living conditions within informal settlements, with more secure housing provided with potable water, better sanitation and drainage systems .

In order to achieve better allocation of resources, cross-sector partnerships (CSPs) are integrated in urban coastal planning policies for climate change mitigation initiatives which involve local population, land developers and urban planners .

Re:Rescue plans for areas threatened by sea level rise and storm floods - 2009/05/07 09:28 GMT Climate change is a curse created by industrialized countries. The victims are poor people of the developing countries. So it is a moral obligation of global leaders to compensate in real sense to achieve sustainability and MDGs.

The national strategic planning mechanism of the developing world must emphasize on the adequate rescue package for the vulnerable and displaced population

Protecting livelihoods through protecting land, water and natural resources remain more important for sustainability.

National governments can adopt larger scale development projects in collaboration with business communities, private sector and international stakeholders
