Since 1989, the Network has advanced in the production of knowledge and actions, focused on labour rights of women and habitat and human rights.

We and Habitat International Coalition (HIC), focuses mobilizations in the fight for implementation of the Right to Housing:

• Calling for the right to defend the city;
• Uphold the Universal Right to Housing;
• Conduct protests against neoliberal policies, that violate the right to housing and access to land- as is seens in the privatization of essential public services, the lack of resources for public policies against the evictions and the distressing situation of someone who has no roof and no access to land;
• Sensitize the whole society for the right to "tenure security", especially for women and other marginalized groups;
• Strengthen the agendas of local and national movements in their struggle for the right to urban reform;

My organization, União dos Movimentos de Moradiat- UMM - through a variety of claims in the State of Sao Paulo has assisted in changing the concept of family.

The housing programs of the State Government has agreed that the concept of household is broader- Before they restricted the definition to households consisting of religious marriages or civil unions or stable - now, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (CDHU) adopted a broader concept of family as a criterion for assistance to the population.

The basic concept of the extended family is not based on legal relationships but based on affiliation. Mononuclear families, ie parents and unmarried mothers, marital unions of the same sex, with or without children, families anaparentais, represented by the union of grandparents and grandchildren, uncles and nephews, brothers and cousins, for example, in addition to others, even with no parental ties, will be entitled to claim a possible housing assistance from the Ministry.

Another novelty is that individuals alone, from 25 years, will also have the right to apply to purchase a home.

The change in the concept embodied by the state housing policy recognizes the dynamic family settings in society today. As basis of this new definition, the Ministry relied the principles of dignity and equality of human beings, expressed in the Constitution of 1988.

According to Secretary of State for Housing and Chairman of CDHU, Lair Krähenbühl, this change in criteria for the Company's attendance is necessary to bring the attention to reality. "It's as if we were living in the past. We needed monitor the changes and looks better suited to the population. This new concept of family rescued to the state a more healthy practice to meet the new reality, a real dynamic of society," says Secretary.

Thanks to the organizational strength of UMM and its networks Women and Habitat Network, success for families was had. It shows that together, change for all women is possible.
