Acces to Land - 2008/09/17 18:13 GMT I am Elena Cocon, representing the Women and Peace Network from Fundacion Guatemala and the Huairou Commission and the Global Coordinator to the Access to Land and Property in Guatemala. Thank you for the opportunity of participating in this Forum. The translation is made by Mara Rodriguez, who is our English support here in Fundacion Guatemala and who allows us to send you this message.
I am indigenous woman from the K´aqchiquel group and I belong to the group of grassroots women from the rural area, were women have no properties under their names but we do work land for our food safety .
The properties are always under men’s names because they are the head of the family, as well as the sons because when they get married they need the land for their families. But it is very important that women get empowerment on the theme of access to land. The ways we can get that empowerment is through women organizations, as a tool to train women and educate us so that we have direct participation regarding access to land, so that in the future the heritages of the family man is divided with equity amongst his sons and daughters.
Also, in Guatemala, there is a Land Fund with its three components which are access to land, leasing of lands and the regulation of state lands. This law is clearly directed to farmers and farmers, both men and women, but men don’t include women so that they can participate in access to land as a family. This happens because only single or widow women have access to land. Also, they promoted the land leasing program, which is a credit of Q2, 500 from which you only have to give pay back Q1, 700. This is of great help to the families and we have statistic that 59% of women get this credit to lease land.
