Re:Using the criteria - 2008/10/02 04:19 GMT Dear Jude and all,

As Train Ride 3 comes to a close, I just want to congratulate all who engaged in these discussions. Indeed, the chart you post Jude is very useful, and I believe the possible indicators a good starting point. I want to point out your question that you put to us, about why we need to show that the world is a better place if women own land- it is true that most women's struggles have had to be legitimized by saying that giving women X right will allow not only women to benefit but entire communities- it is rare that women's rights are respected simply becuase that is what they are- their rights. There most times needs to be an underlying reason, that OTHERS will also benefit, etc- this is especially true for land. I like your challenge, that we demand that mens show us how the world is a better place becuase land has been in thier hands for this long! But besides just making us think a bit critically about all of this, it is an important question more specifically in terms of the criteria and indicators. We need to ensure that our indicators emphasize specifically how WOMEN are effected by these tools. We must always look for indicators that give a clear picture of how the tool affects women, and I would argue in particular, poor women. Too often we fall into the trap of stating that something is helping women beucase we see the greater community benefiting- this should be an added bonus only, but not the measurement by which to determine if the tool benefits women. Anyways, I feel that the indicators you propose do just that- they are specific to women, and I hope that we continue to focus our indicators for those women at the grassroots level. With thanks for your excellent moderations, and looking forward to Train Ride 4. Best, Birte
