An international Expert Group Meeting on “Urban Legal Knowledge” took place in Nairobi from 21 – 22 June 2011, organized by UN-HABITAT. Addressing the meeting, Dr. Juan Clos, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, expressed his confidence in the EGM “to provide much needed guidance on urban legislation and the opportunities, challenges and risks of land readjustment in the developing world.” He further emphasized that urban legislation is among the key priorities of UN-HABITAT in meeting the challenges of rapid urbanization.

Participants at the workshop identified key elements of a framework to develop urban legal knowledge and create a global system to support cities in the developing world. Land readjustment was one of the key issues discussed at the meeting. It was recognized as an entry point to facilitate large scale expansion of cities, create more public space and de-congest slums.

The EGM brought together participants from 11 countries and provided useful recommendations on how to take the urban legal agenda forward.
