GLTN partners demonstrated their innovative work on grassroots participation and Islamic principles on land to a receptive audience at two side events at UN-HABITAT’s 23rd Governing Council. The Governing Council took place in Nairobi, Kenya from 11 – 15 April 2011.

The side event “Not About Us Without Us - Grassroots Participation in Land”, co-organized by the Huairou Commission, highlighted efforts to scale up grassroots participation in land processes. It featured presentations by the State Government of Pernambuco (Brazil) and by grassroots organizations SPARC (India), Espaço Feminista (Brazil) and MWEDO (Tanzania). The last two organizations are members of the Huairou Commission. The event demonstrated that grassroots organizations are taking great steps forward in negotiating land rights. It further highlighted that understanding technical aspects of land and engaging with local and national governments are key factors for success.

GLTN launched a new training package on “Land, Property and Housing Rights in the Muslim World” at another Governing Council side event, co-organized by the University of East London. The event demonstrated the importance of Islamic principles in shaping access to land and presented opportunities for engagement. Presentations by the Kenya Polytechnic University, the Huairou Commission and UN-HABITAT’s Somalia programme highlighted the relevance of the training package for various contexts. GLTN encourages governments, land professionals, training institutions and other partners to adapt and utilize the training package.
