Evictions and Demolitions in Port Harcourt: Report of Fact-Finding Mission [Abridged Version]
Evictions and Demolitions in Port Harcourt: Report of Fact-Finding Mission [Abridged Version] Description:
This is a report by a five-person fact-finding mission led by UN-HABITAT has visited Port Harcourt, Nigeria, from 12 to 16 March 2009. This report is a result of petitions received by UN-HABITAT and international outcry about large-scale demolitions and reported violations of housing rights undertaken by the Rivers State Government (RSG). Various UN-HABITAT partners and members of the Advisory Group on Forced Evictions to the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT (AGFE) had also expressed their concerns and requested UN-HABITAT to undertake a mission to assess the situation, or alternatively field an AGFE mission to look at the matter in situ. Security concerns and availability of experts adversely affected an earlier response of UN-HABITAT.
