Training on 'Sustainable Housing in Times of Climate Change - A Gender Perspective'

Target audience: The course targets NFP alumni who are urban professionals occupying positions in different sectors of society, namely local and national government, private sector and NGOs. Participants will be chosen according to their professional experience in one or more of the following topics: housing and human settlement planning, environmental planning, green technologies and gender planning.

Objectives: At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Understand the meaning of urban sustainability from the perspective of international policies, laws and agreement.Identify the relationship between housing and environmental policies.
  • Identify the different contributions of housing to sustainable development objectives. 
  • Identify the challenges posed by the present (and future) climate change conditions to the creation and realisation of sustainable housing. 
  • Define and understand the role that vulnerable groups of the society should play in realizing sound adaptation and mitigation strategies to achieve sustainable housing. 
  • Identify the different performance qualities of sustainable human settlements and the possible entry points for improving policies, programmes and projects targeting adaptation and mitigation strategies to combat climate change with a gender perspective.
  • To acquire skills on methods such as risk and vulnerability assessment, adaptation planning and gender sensitive planning.
  • To critically assess the implications of international policies, laws and agreements of climate change and sustainable urbanization for vulnerable groups in developing countries.
  • Compose a draft document summarising the lessons learnt during site visits, including groups’ recommendations on the way forward to disseminate the experience and knowledge gained.

Admission criteria:

All alumni who previously benefited from an NFP fellowship from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines and Indonesia are eligible to apply for an NFP fellowship to participate in this refresher course. Conditions to apply:

  • You have attended a course at IHS or another Dutch Higher Education institute funded by NFP and graduated before May 2008.
  • Any NFP alumnus can also ask for a colleague to apply together.
  • Please note: if you are not an NFP alumnus and can secure your own means to finance your participation in the refresher course (e.g. not applying for the NFP fellowship) you are also welcome to apply. Your admission depends on the number of places still available on the course and your motivation (see below).

IHS will select the applications according to the criteria below. Alumni who want to apply need to:

  • Have affinity with and/or work related to sustainable development planning, housing and human settlement planning, environmental planning, green technologies and gender planning.
