E-discussion on governance in land administration Print

Development practitioners of all persuasions have recently recognized the importance of governance and the rule of law as an essential precondition for economic and social development. In many contexts, land is identified as one of the most corrupt sectors together with the judiciary and the police. Still, given the complexity of land issues virtually everywhere and the fact that institutional arrangements are highly country specific, no systematic guidance is available for Bank staff and development partners to diagnose and benchmark land governance and to contribute to improving it over time.

A public online forum will be conducted during the 14th-25th January 2008, hosted by the Global Land Tool Network. This public forum aims to invite discussion and suggestions for indicators and methodology to measure governance, based on 6 key land administration principles identified in the Conceptual Framework. The Conceptual Framework Document will be available for review 7 January 2008. Participants are encouraged to read this documents and concentrate of the main Principles of the Framework, reflecting on their experience in countries and different formal and informal environments of land administration services.
