Four new GLTN tools and initiatives were presented by partners at a conference in Marrakech, Morocco from 18-22 May 2011. The conference was organised by the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and featured the theme: ‘Bridging the Gaps between Cultures”.

A new guide on land rights for indigenous people in cities

This Policy guide to secure land rights for indigenous peoples in cities has been jointly prepared by UN-HABITAT and the Secretariat of the Global Land Tool Network.

Officially launched at the 10th Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, in New York, May 17, this guide helps inform decision-makers on the problems facing indigenous people and their rights when it comes to land and property rights in the urban context. It sets out many interesting ideas on this how to achieve this through a human rights framework.

A new resolution adopted at UN-HABITATs 23rd Governing Council represents a paradigm shift in the global debate on land, forging an international consensus on the continuum of land rights and alternative forms of secure tenure. The resolution gives GLTN a strong mandate to continue developing pro-poor and engendered land tools. “This is the first time we have seen the Governing Council adopt a resolution that deals specifically with the work that GLTN is doing”, says Ambassador Agnes Kalibbala of Uganda, Chair of the International Advisory Board of GLTN.

A special session of the African Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (AMCHUD) will be organized on Saturday 9 April on the sidelines of the 23rd session of UN-HABITAT’s Governing Council. The special meeting will discuss the progress of the Bamako Declaration and Plan of Action and review institutional and financial arrangements, in particular the hosting of AMCHUD’s secretariat.
